What you Need to Make This Shrimp Egg Roll in a Bowl Recipe
- Sesame Oil
- Shrimp
- Onions
- Garlic
- Ginger
- Coleslaw Mix
- Shredded Carrots
- Water Chestnuts
- Salt Chinese 5 Spice Powder (optional)
- Green Onions
The Chinese 5 spice powder is optional, simply because I don't believe it to be a common kitchen staple in most American kitchens, outside of Chinese-American kitchens.
If you can find it and use it, I highly recommend it! It really adds a flavor similar to real egg rolls.
This shrimp from Trader Joe's is my favorite to use for this recipe! They're wild caught, at a price that is more affordable than most others!
Substitutions/Variations
- Use sliced cabbage in place of the coleslaw mix.
- Use garlic and ginger powder in place of fresh if you're out.
Top Tip
Serve this over rice for a full meal! You'll have protein, veggies, and the carbs.
If you're eating paleo, Whole30, or don't tolerate rice, you could use cauliflower or broccoli rice, or quinoa.
What is Egg Roll in a Bowl
Egg roll in a bowl is basically a healthier, deconstructed egg roll.
You take all the filling of egg rolls, but instead of wrapping it inside the wonton egg roll and deep fry it, you eat it as is with delicious sauce and toppings!
It's much healthier way to eat it since there's no deep frying involved, and you can only need a small amount of sesame rather than a gallon of soybean oil or other highly inflammatory oil.
It's also gluten free and paleo friendly! No gluten filled wrappers involved.
Instructions
To make this recipe, start by heating sesame oil in a Dutch oven and add the shrimp, salt, and coconut aminos to cook until no longer opaque.
When it's finished, set the shrimp aside and discard the liquid.
Add the remaining sesame oil to the pan and cook the onions in it. After the onions just start to wilt, add the ginger and garlic and stir.
After about 30 seconds, add the coleslaw mix and cook for a few minutes until everything is starting to wilt and no longer super crunchy.
Add the water chestnuts, salt, coconut aminos, and if using the Chinese 5 spice powder, and add back in the shrimp. Mix together thoroughly then serve and add toppings of choice. Enjoy!
