Why You'll Love this Gluten Free Shepherd's Pie

Shepherd's Pie is such a comfort food! However, making it gluten free means even more people can enjoy it safely!

It's delicious and has the potential to pack in lots of vegetables too!

    Needed Ingredients

    • Potatoes
    • Butter
    • Milk
    • Salt
    • Pepper
    • Ground Beef
    • All-Purpose Gluten Free Flour
    • Broth
    • Corn

    How to Make this Recipe

Preheat the oven to 350F Degrees.

Start by making the mashed potatoes. If you need a dairy free version, check out these Whole30 Mashed Potatoes!

Place the chopped potatoes into boiling water and boil until fork tender.

Add the milk, butter, salt, and pepper and mash completely. Set aside.

Next Cook the ground beef in a skillet over medium heat. If you're using any extra veggies, add them in now.

When the meat is almost finished, slowly add in the flour and stir the meat to incorporate it.

Add in the broth slowly, stirring as you go so it can thicken.

Spread the meat in the bottom of a 2.5 qt. baking dish.

Add the corn on top of the meat.

Spread the mashed potatoes evenly on top of the mixture.

    Spread the cheese on top.

Place in the oven for 10 minutes to allow everything to heat through and for the cheese to melt.

Finally, turn the oven to broil and move up the rack. Broil the dish for a couple of minutes or until the cheese is starting to get a bit brown. Serve and enjoy!

    Kitchen Tools Needed

As there are a few layers to this dish, you'll need a few tools or gadgets!

    • Dutch oven (or large pot)
    • Measuring Spoons
    • Measuring Cups
    • Potato Masher
    • Large Skillet
    • Cooking Spoon
    • 2.5 qt. Baking Dish

This is the baking dish that I use and love!

    Optional Mix-ins

Want to take this gluten free shepherd's pie up a notch and add more nutrients? Add in some more veggies! Some options are:

    • Onions
    • Carrots (shredded carrots make it easy!
    • Peas
    • Peppers
    • Asparagus
    • Celery

What's the Difference between Shepherd's Pie and Cottage Pie

While they are extremely similar, the main difference is that traditionally, cottage pie uses ground beef and shepherd's pie uses ground lamb.

They are very often mixed up, or both of them end up being called shepherd's pie.

So yes, you're technically making cottage pie here!

Where Does Shepherd's Pie Come From?

It depends on who you ask!

Most sources say it is a British, Scottish, or Irish dish, from the 1700's It was a great way to stretch food when money was tight!

    Storage and Reheating Instructions

For any leftovers, place them in an airtight container. Store them in the fridge for up to 3 days.

To reheat, you can use the microwave.

My favorite way to reheat this though, is in the oven. Place the oven on 350F degrees and place the leftovers on an oven safe dish. Heat until your liking.

    Freezing Instructions

Yes you can freeze shepherd's pie! I do recommend only freezing the beef and corn layer, and making the mashed potatoes fresh and the texture changes upon thawing.

Thaw in the fridge the day before cooking.

Heat the mixture in the oven on 350F degrees for about 20 minutes, then top with the freshly made mashed potatoes and pick up the recipe from there.

    Substitutions/Variations

There are definitely some changes you can make here depending on what ingredients you have on hand!

    • Swap ground turkey or chicken in place of the ground beef.
    • You can try using arrowroot or tapioca flour in place of the gluten free flour.
    • Try using various broths! I love to make this slow cooker bone broth, but you can use chicken broth, beef broth, or even vegetable broth!

    Top Tip

Be sure to use extra sharp cheese for the topping! It really takes the flavor up a notch!

Does Shepherd's Pie have gluten in it?

Shepherd's Pie does contain gluten if a wheat based flour is used to thicken the meat mixture. However, this version uses all-purpose gluten free flour to make it gluten free instead!

Can you substitute cornstarch for flour in shepherd's pie?

You can! This will ensure that the finished result is gluten free as well.
