Inside out egg rolls are a deconstructed version of the classic Chinese egg roll, where all the ingredients such as ground pork, cabbage, and flavorful seasonings, are cooked together in a single dish. It offers a savory and satisfying meal without the need for a deep fried, gluten filled wrapper.

Ingredients Needed
- Sesame Oil
- Ground Pork
- Salt
- Coconut Aminos
- Onion
- Garlic
- Ginger
- Coleslaw Mix
- Shredded Carrots
- Water Chestnuts
All of these ingredients will make you a Whole30 Egg Roll in a Bowl, everything is compatible! Check the ingredient labels just to be sure as you never know if something may sneak in.
Substitutions/Variations
- Use half a head of cabbage that you thinly slice in place of the coleslaw bag.
- Don't have sesame oil on hand? You can use olive or avocado oil!
- While pork is what's inside classic Chinese egg rolls, you can use ground chicken or turkey if that's what you have.
- Use shrimp in place of the pork to make Shrimp Egg Roll in a Bowl!

How to Make
Start by heating the sesame oil over medium heat in a large saucepan or Dutch oven. Add the ground pork and cook thoroughly. Drain and set aside.
Add more sesame oil to the pan and sauté the onions. After a few minutes when they become translucent, add the ginger and garlic and sauté for another minute or two, stirring frequently.
Next add the coleslaw mix and shredded carrots and mix thoroughly. Cook it until everything has started to wilt and is no longer very crunchy.
Add into the pan the cooked pork, water chestnuts, coconut aminos, and 5 spice powder if using. Salt to taste.
Mix thoroughly and enjoy!
What to Pair it With
- White Rice is my favorite thing to serve this meal with!
- You could also try brown rice or any rice variety.
- Try serving this over egg noodles in place of the egg roll wrapper.
- To keep this a Whole30 Egg Roll in a Bowl, serve it over cauli rice!
Top Tip
While the Chinese 5 Spice Powder is optional, if you can find it, use it!
It really adds an authentic egg roll flavor to this meal.
I found mine in a natural grocery store, but you can also find this in regular supermarkets and Asian grocery stores.

Ingredients
- 5 tbsp. Sesame oil split
- 1 lb. ground pork
- 4 tsp. coconut aminos split
- 1 large onion sliced
- 5 cloves garlic diced
- 1 inch piece of ginger diced
- 1 10-14 oz. bag of coleslaw
- 1 cup shredded carrots
- 1 can shredded carrots
- 1 tsp. Chinese 5 Spice Powder optional
Instructions
- Heat 2 tbsps. of the oil in a large pan or Dutch oven over medium heat. Add the pork, 1 tsp. salt, and 1 tsp. coconut aminos and cook until completely browned. Drain and set aside.
- In the same pan, add the remaining sesame oil. Add in the onions and stir until they begin to wilt. Add in the garlic and ginger and mix frequently for about 1 minute.
- Add in the coleslaw mix and the shredded carrots. Stir and cook for just a few minutes until everything starts to wilt and isn't super crunchy.
- Add to the pan the pork, remaining salt, water chestnuts, 1 Tbsp. of coconut aminos, and the Chinese 5 spice powder if using. Stir completely.
- Add any optional toppings or sauce and enjoy!
