When doing the Whole30, mashed potatoes are an absolute staple! They are absolutely allowed and will provide a comfort carb alongside your protein!

This Gluten Free Meatloaf pairs perfectly with these potatoes! Serve it up with broccoli or your favorite veggie and you've got a complete meal!

    Why you need this recipe

It may sound silly, but when I did my first Whole30 a few years back, I had NO IDEA how to make Whole30 mashed potatoes without milk and butter! I could only think of coconut milk and olive oil. All together it was kind of a gross combination! Definitely not edible!

The next time I made them, I realized we had some almond milk in the house, but my husband realized too late that it was vanilla flavored. Another awful combination!

Since mashed potatoes are a favorite food for many people yet so many people can't tolerate dairy too well (not to mention you can't have dairy on the Whole30!) this recipe comes in handy!

    Ingredients for Whole30 Mashed Potatoes

Ingredients for Whole30 mashed potatoes from left to right: potatoes, ghee, salt, almond milk, garlic powder, and onion powder.
    • Potatoes
    • Almond Milk
    • Ghee
    • Salt
    • Garlic Powder
    • Onion Powder

Traditional mashed potatoes are filled with dairy. Butter, milk, and sometimes sour cream too! When doing a Whole30, no dairy is allowed!

The only exception is ghee, as the milk solids have been removed.

In place of butter, this recipe uses ghee. This makes it both Whole30 compatible and lactose free! No milk solids here.

Not sure what ghee is? Check out this article! In a nutshell, ghee is butter that has had the milk solids removed. You can buy it pre-made or make it at home!

Note- ghee will say it contains dairy on the label. This is ok for the Whole30 program! It's the only "exception" to the no dairy rule.

Almond milk is used here in place of dairy milk. It's not like coconut milk with has a strong sweet and nutty flavor. It's more mild in taste and doesn't have an overpowering flavor at all.

Perfect for achieving a nice consistency without compromising the flavor!

    Instructions

Boil water in a large saucepan on high heat.

While waiting for the water to boil, start by washing and peeling (if desired) the potatoes.

Some washed and some peeled potatoes shown overhead on a cutting board.

Next, chop the potatoes into uniform chunks.

When the water boils, add the potatoes and let them boil for roughly 10 minutes, or until fork tender.

Once finished, drain the pan completely of the water and add the milk to the potatoes. Note: You can always adjust the amount of milk as you may not have exactly 3 lbs. of potatoes!

Adding the milk to the potatoes.

Next, add the ghee. Remember, you can adjust this amount as well for flavor and consistency.

Finally, add the spices and mix thoroughly.

    How to Serve

The consistency is PERFECT to add gravy to! However if you're not serving gravy, you may want to add another tablespoon or two of almond milk.

There are plenty of Whole30 gravy options, but this paleo gravy is my go to. It's easy to make and if you regularly cook paleo or Whole30, you probably have everything on hand already!

These mashed potatoes also go perfectly with this gluten free meatloaf! Add some vegetables on the side and you have a nice combo of protein, carbs, and veggies!

    Variations/Substitutions

    • You can use some olive oil in place of some of the ghee. I would definitely go with a mild or light tasting oil to not have a weird or overpowering taste!
    • Try using fresh onion and garlic in place of or in addition to the spices. Chop and dice them, then place them in the boiling water when the potatoes are almost finished so they soften and infuse the potatoes with flavor.

    Top Tip

Serve this with dairy free ranch dressing! So many people (myself included) LOVE to have ranch dressing on their mashed potatoes, it really just takes it up to a whole other level!

The ranch recipe is also Whole30 compatible, a win win!
