Italian Sausage Skillet

This is such a great, simple meal! With only 6 ingredients, you can whip up this Italian Sausage Skillet in no time! Paleo meals don’t have to be complicated!

Ingredients for Italian Sausage Skillet

If you’re doing the Whole30 or eating Paleo or Keto, you’ll want to find an Italian sausage that doesn’t include any added sugars. When I made this, I used Italian Sausage from my pig share. In my opinion, pig shares are some of the best, most humane ways to eat meat, granted the farmer has high animal quality standards. The farm we go through treats their animals well, as they are allowed to roam and pasture naturally and live a life as stress free as possible!

If this isn’t an option or you just want store bought, there are still plenty of options for a clean and healthy Italian sausage! Local to CT like me? Currently, the store brand of Shoprite is sugar free! Always check labels just incase, especially if you’re doing the Whole30!

This post has a list of compliant sausages! It’s super helpful and one that I send to my clients when they’re having a hard time finding compliant sausage.

For the bell pepper, use any you like! I used a yellow bell pepper in the photo. I chose a large one, as I like to have leftovers and have a veggie heavy meal.

If you need a compliant marinara sauce, they aren’t actually hard to find! While many marinara sauces do contain added sugar, there are also many that do not. Again, the shoprite brand Wholesome Pantry has some organic marinara sauces that are sugar free and whole30 compatible!

The size of the sauce isn’t the most important thing. If it’s a few ounces over or under, it’s not a problem.

Cooking Fat

You’ll notice this recipe calls for cooking fat. You can use any you like! If you’re Whole30 or Paleo this could be ghee, coconut oil, avocado oil, or olive oil. If you tolerate it, you could also use butter! Note that butter is not Whole30 compatible or Paleo friendly, but is keto friendly! Lard and shortening are also options.

Italian Sausage Skillet

  • 2 Tbsp cooking fat of choice
  • 1 large bell pepper thinly sliced
  • 1 large onion thinly sliced
  • 5 cloves garlic diced
  • 1 lb. Italian Sausage ground
  • 1 28 oz jar of marinara sauce of choice

  • Heat the oil in a skillet or dutch oven over high heat.
  • Add the peppers, onions, and garlic to the pan and stir while cooking for 5-7 minutes, until softened.
  • Add the ground Italian sausage and break up. Add the marinara sauce and mix thoroughly.
  • Cook for approximately 10 minutes, stirring and breaking up the meat until cooked. Enjoy!

Allergen and Lifestyle Friendly

This Italian Sausage Skillet checks off a lot of boxes! It’s naturally gluten and grain free! Just be sure the sausage doesn’t contain any gluten or grains! It’s pretty easy to find sausage that doesn’t contain them though.

It’s also Whole30 compatible, and paleo friendly! Again, just make sure the sausage doesn’t have any added sugar! Same with the marinara sauce, check the label for compatibility.

How to serve Italian Sausage Skillet

Need some pairing ideas for this Italian Sausage Skillet? It’s really quite delicious as is! I like to serve it with a side salad. Make the salad nice and full with a delicious dressing and you’re good to go! Need some dressing ideas? I’ve got you covered! Check out my dressing recipes here!

Another delicious way to serve this would be with cauliflower mash. A nice, creamy cauliflower mash done right can be so delicious! It’s important to not make it too watery however. Keto? Use butter! If you need to keep the sides Whole30 compatible and paleo friendly, use ghee in place of butter!

Obviously, if you’re not Whole30, you could serve this with some type of pasta! It’s nice that there are so many options of pasta for various lifestyles. Lots of gluten free options, from lentil pasta to rice pasta! There’s also some paleo based pastas, but I’ve not tried any to recommend them or not!

Veggie noodles work too! Spiralize some sweet potatoes, squash, or zucchini!

I’m slowly gearing up to try keto again, I felt seriously underprepared last time due to a lack of recipes and part of me felt that there was just no way to enjoy food whilst keto. I’m extremely glad I’ve decided to put in the research and give it a go again as it’s given me the opportunity to find recipes like this! Can’t wait to give this a go, thanks for the post!
